With a mission of promoting stable, vibrant communities by providing our Neighbors with comprehensive financial empowerment and homeownership services, NeighborWorks Western Pennsylvania has been enhancing lives and expanding housing opportunities for nearly 50 years. In 1968, Dorothy Mae Richardson – a mother, housewife, and activist – and a group of her neighbors founded the organization (then known as Neighborhood Housing Services, or NHS) in response to the discriminatory lending practices and urban renewal policies that they witnessed destroying the homes and community fabric of their neighborhood. With the support of public officials and bank leaders, the group was able to capitalize a $750,000 revolving loan fund, which made mortgage loans considered “too risky” for conventional lenders and allowed many renters to become homeowners. The model that Dorothy and her neighbors developed was replicated nationwide, resulting in the founding of NeighborWorks America (then known as the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation) to provide technical and financial support to the numerous NHS –inspired organizations nationwide. Over the years, our programs and services have changed, but our commitment to self-sufficiency and personal and community stability remains steadfast.
